Burao Municipality Launches Urban Risk Mapping Initiative Using GIS Technology

 Burco, Somaliland

On January 6, 2025, the Association of Local Government Authorities of Somaliland (ALGASL), in collaboration with VNG International and the Burao District Administration, held a meeting at the Burao Local Government headquarters to officially launch the registration and mapping of urban risks in Burao using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology.

The initiative, part of the Danwadaag Project, focuses on improving service delivery and enhancing urban risk management in Burao by utilising advanced GIS tools. This modern approach aims to provide accurate data and effective solutions for identifying and addressing urban risks, thereby strengthening the municipality’s ability to manage challenges efficiently.

By integrating GIS into urban planning and risk management processes, the project is expected to build the technical capacity of Burao Municipality, enabling it to take a proactive role in safeguarding the city’s residents and infrastructure.

The meeting concluded with a strong commitment from all stakeholders to continue strengthening collaboration between ALGASL, VNG International, and the Burao District Administration to ensure the success and sustainability of this initiative.
