ALGASL Empowers Local Governments Through Comprehensive Waste Management Training

Hargeisa, Somaliland, October 5, 2023

In a strategic move to enhance local governance and foster sustainable waste management practices, the Association of Local Government Authorities of Somaliland (ALGASL) has conducted a three-day workshop training for regional local government representatives. The initiative, held at the Mansoor venue in Hargeisa, aimed to address critical gaps in waste management knowledge and skills among local government officials.

Capacity Building for Sustainable Waste Management

ALGASL, committed to strengthening local governments through capacity building, service delivery, and advocacy, initiated this comprehensive training program. The primary focus was on upgrading waste management capabilities to increase municipalities' effectiveness in handling municipal waste.

Participants, comprising representatives from regional local governments, were equipped with essential skills and knowledge during the workshop. The training aimed to enhance proficiency in waste collection and management techniques, ultimately contributing to the creation of cleaner cities.

Encouraging Municipal Learning and Information Sharing

At the core of the training concept lies the encouragement of municipal learning, information sharing, and problem-solving among municipalities. By adapting service delivery to residents' needs and applying effective waste management practices, local governments can elevate the standard of services provided to their communities.

Collaboration with Private Agents

Recognizing the significance of public-private partnerships in waste management, the training also delved into collaborative efforts with supportive private agents in specific regions. The managerial techniques of waste management were discussed to encourage cooperation between public and private entities for more effective waste control.

Objective and Outcomes

The training, which commenced on October 3, 2023, sought to achieve several key objectives:

  1. Upgrade Waste Management: Increase municipalities' ability to handle municipal waste through effective district waste management.

  2. Proficiency in Waste Collection: Enhance proficiency in waste collection and management techniques to create cleaner cities.

  3. Capacity Building for Other Districts: Strengthen and expand the capabilities of districts whose employees lack necessary education and experience.

  4. Problem Solving: Enable participants to find solutions to the challenges they face, emphasizing waste identification, segregation, and classification approaches.

A Step Towards Cleaner and More Efficient Cities

With full attendance and active participation from regional local government representatives, ALGASL's waste management training has set a precedent for collaborative efforts towards cleaner and more efficient cities. As local governments continue to play a pivotal role in community development, this initiative aims to ensure that waste management practices align with environmental sustainability goals and meet the evolving needs of residents. ALGASL remains committed to fostering continuous learning and improvement in waste management for the benefit of local communities across Somaliland.
